Debt – In many cases, college has turned from the American Dream to the American Debt.  In 2005, lenders provided about $14 billion in private loans, a 734% increase from a decade earlier.  This does not include credit card or government student loan debt.  Also, in 2006, it was been suggested that 85% of personal debt in America was squandered by people trying to live like someone else, be like someone else, or contributing to someone else's wealth. 

Poverty – Escaping poverty has become more elusive.  The poverty level has been chasing lower income households for decades, gaining as living cost rise and low salaries plateau.  The average savings for Americans, in 2006, was a negative .5%– less than zero savings.  This compares to that of the Great Depression. 

Dependency – With today’s trends, only 1% of the population at the age of 65 will become wealthy, 4% financially independent, 15% will have modest savings, while the remaining 80% will be financially dependent on others for survival to some extent.  Our elderly  and our young are leaning on family and government support more often.
